Part 2 of helping the Stellers Jays nesting on the back of our RV in Yosemite National Park. Right when you think you have it all figured out, life can throw you a curve ball. After lots of excitement of Stellers Jays building a nest on their fifth wheel at Yosemite and a recommitment to their own nest, the RV Odd Couple received some bad news right after launching their last video. They were told by the reservation specialists for Thousand Trails that they would not be able to extend their stay at Yosemite Lakes Resort & Campground. That same day the Steller’s Jay laid her first egg. The RV Odd Couple were advised by Mackenzie Richmond (Animal sciences Iowa State University) that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 would not allow them to move the nest once there were eggs in it. Moving the nest would require a licensed professional and a permit issued by the Department of Fish & Wildlife. They were also advised that the fines for doing so were up to $15000 and 6 months in jail. The RV Odd Couple knew that they had a big problem to solve and struggled to find the right person (manager) to speak with at Thousand Trails Yosemite Lakes Resort. The RV Odd Squad (Subscribers of their YouTube channel) jumped into action and helped in many ways including a petition to get Thousand Trails to change their mind and let them stay thru to the baby birds first flight. A local Reporter named Guy McCarthy from The Union Democrat, a newspaper that serves the Sonora and Sierra Nevada foothills area of Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties, California since 1854 picked up the story and released this article:

In this video the RV Odd Couple recounts their roller coaster experience going from excitement to despair trying to do everything they could for the Stellers Jays. The RV Odd Couple’s new friends decided to move in and built a nest in their RV while camping in Yosemite. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the RV Odd Couple started chronicling the Steller’s Jay’s mating rituals. Get a front row seat to Steller’s Jays as they nest and prepare their home for the arrival of baby chicks. And in similar fashion, the RV Odd Couple has rededicated themselves to taking care of their nest, or in this case, RV! Fulltime RVing while working can get in the way of seeing the sights. The RV Odd Couple describes some of the mistakes that they’ve made while trying to work from the road.

Be sure to follow the RV Odd Couple as they try to document Steller’s Jay Eggs, and share the surprise news that they heard on Mother’s Day!
